Umbrella stroller for a larger, older toddler - something compact, spacious + the cheapest possible

23 Apr 2020

Greetings!

We are considering getting an umbrella stroller, but I am not sure if there is such that would meet our requirements.

My DS is 3yo, so he doesn't really need a daily stroller anymore. But we do need something small that he could occasionally use - like to rest his legs on an all-day trip, or for his great-aunt to take him on a walk (she is super scared that a child not harnessed in its stroller will run away from her and she wouldn't be able to run after him), etc...

This buggy should be the smallest possible, easy to fold, and that would not take up space or be in the way in our home since we won't be using it that often (our space is quite limited, that is why we already got rid of our Valco Snap 4). At the same time, it is necessary for the buggy to have a higher weight capacity, since my son is 102cm tall and weighs 17 kg, so not a small baby anymore. Considering the occasional use, I would also appreciate the lowest possible price - I am also able to accept a pre-loved model.

Is there something for us available, or are all hopes lost?

Thank you.

Hello!

If you insist on it being an umbrella stroller, meaning two handlebars and an umbrella type of fold (which is, however, quite long), there is not that much to choose from. I would certainly strongly recommend getting a second-hand Maclaren (since a new one is quite expensive). It's a high-quality brand, meaning even an already used model will still be working well, which, combined with very high weight capacity and generous space in the seat, makes it an almost ideal choice. I, myself, own a pre-loved Maclaren Techno XLR to have as a spare at my mom's - truly a top choice, umbrella strollers-wise.

For more inspiration, I will also mention models like the Gesslein S5 or the Koelstra Simba T4, which are also absolutely fine for you and your needs space-wise.

BUT - I must add, I would probably look more at the ultra-compacts - travel buggies with one single handlebar, which are not only more compact than the umbrella type, but also easier to manipulate in a way. It's true, however, the space in the seat is not as generous as in a Maclaren, but it could work ok for such use as you describe. I will, thus, suggest a Kinderkraft Indy, maybe an Espiro Art… And, in personal ads with pre-loved models, I would also search for a Cybex Eezy S or a Baby Jogger City Mini Zip, even though the BJ may have a bit short backrest for a 102cm tall child... The suitability depends on if you plan on your son to nap in the buggy as well.

Your -very berry- Eli.

Now, this is your place to ask. I'm listening.
